Scotty, a 4-year-old Scottish Fold who belongs to Dr. Darcie, is an indoor cat with supervised patio visitations. He was recently diagnosed with Giardia, following a routine Fecal Examination. Giardia is a single-celled organism that parasitizes the small intestines. The most common symptom of a giardia infection is continuous or intermittent diarrhea. Scotty was treated with an intestinal antibiotic, and his follow-up Fecal Exam came back negative. He has always enjoyed his trips onto the patio, often lounging in planters, and we wouldn't want anything to keep him from enjoying the simpler things in life!At The Cat Doctor, we recommend annual Fecal Examinations for all cats, to prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases. Zoonotic diseases are illnesses that can be transmitted between cats and people. A few examples of zoonoses are: Giardia, Toxoplasmosis and Roundworms. Studies have shown that up to 30% of commercially packaged potting soil contains roundworms, all the more reason to have your feline friend's stool evaluated annually. In addition to providing your cat with regular wellness care, we recommend that you apply Revolution to your cat's skin monthly, to help prevent intestinal parasites.
